Rebuilding & Equipping village schools in southern Morocco

Amazigh Rural Schools Initiative

Launched in 2024 in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck southern Morocco in September 2023, The Scheherazade Foundation's Amazigh Rural Schools Initiative was created to support some of the most overlooked and under-resourced communities in the High Atlas region. Many rural schools – already in a fragile state – were left badly damaged, threatening the education and safety of countless children.

Our campaign began at the Ait Messoud school, where we have led a comprehensive effort to rebuild and reimagine the space. This includes repairing and reinforcing damaged buildings to withstand future earthquakes, constructing new playgrounds, and providing essential classroom resources such as books, desks, chairs, and teaching materials. We’ve also helped to ensure that the school has access to clean water, electricity, and proper sanitation facilities – transforming the daily experience for pupils and teachers alike.

Although the work is ongoing, the results at Ait Messoud have already been remarkable, bringing new energy and hope to the community. Building on this success, we are now expanding the initiative to reach other rural schools in the region, restoring not only buildings, but dignity and opportunity for the next generation.
